This zine was a project in my Experimental Typography course. The goal of this project was to create a zine based on the theme of denotation & connotation. I chose to explore the stereotypes associated with different types of coffee drinks juxtaposed with their literal definitions.

Denotation & Connotation Zine

Print Design

To address the theme of denotation & connotation, I wanted to explore how different types of coffee drinks have stereotypes associated with them that don’t correlate to the literal definition of the drink itself.

The first step in my process was to research what keywords are associated with 5 different popular drinks, as well as their objective definitions.

01. Inspiration

In order to make the zine, I first collected images of the different coffee drinks I wanted to include and used Photoshop to arrange them on the pages.

02. Making the Zine

My final step was to utilize typography to express the definitions and stereotypes of each coffee drink.

The result is a 10-page zine, titled ‘decaf-tation and coffee-tation’ that juxtaposes the process and visual examples of coffee drinks with the keywords they are typically associated with.
